Sharing the office this week with old mate Francesco the drone legend. Lovely people on the All in One Swan 50 and filling in for Bull for the week. Enjoyable and productive week on the Costa Smerelda. Back home to the Costa del Solent to interrupt Kate’s obsession with the US Masters on Sunday.

As 2025 draws to a close, Simon Johnson and I recorded our yearly Sailing.Dog re-cap.

The last 12 months was full of a wide range of sailing and coaching activities. We focus this year’s wrap on three campaigns. Firstly a successful World Championship campaign in the 5.5 Metre class. Then looking into the teamwork behind the custom build, commissioning and racing of Eau Vive, the lovely Howlett 6 Metre yacht. Finally a look into the Admiral’s Cup with the New Zealand team’s “small boat”, Callisto, where I acted as coach. We also got an insight into Simon’s busy year of racing some incredible yachts across oceans and in wonderful locations.

We delve into all sorts of sailboat-racing related topics and chat about the classes, individuals and teams that I have been associated with recently. So cool to do a weekend of match race training in Cowes. This was put together by Graham Sunderland and the group he has organised under the Cowes Match Racing banner. What a great thing to do in the dark months at home and there are so many great young sailors into it. I don’t get the opportunity to drive much, so it was a thrill to sail with great young local sailors Killian Boag and Zeb Fellows. Great learning environment under Graham’s coaching and superb management of the day.

I have been supporting Team Stella this year in the venerable International Six Metre class. It’s been emotional, enjoyable and I know I have grown personally. It has involved two teams and I am the only non-spanish speaker in the team (que?). So much learnt about the wonderful latino culture. From our leader Violeta, I have learnt a lot about the relentless pursuit of excellence and at the same time, looking out for your people.

Just finished road-tripping from Lake Garda to Cowes after one of my favourite events - the 5.5 Metre Alpen Cup on Lake Garda. Had not looked at the 5.5 since the 2023 Worlds concluded in Porto Cervo last year. What a pleasure to get back to sailing this class. Great team with Peter Morton and Ruairidh Scott, beautiful boats, awesome fleet of people and an incredible setting. 18 boats from nine countries in the season-opener - impressive turn-out. We were steady across the event, which was very pleasing. Looked after very well by coach and local legend, Frithjof Keen. Thanks to Robert Deaves for lovely pictures and class promotion. Finally, a shout out to Louise Morton, Sam and Millsy sailing on Girls on Film, a boat we built in Cowes in 2020, for pushing us hard all the way - great to see how well they are performing in a very challenging class. Also to Norway’s Team Otto in our former boat that we had commissioned in 2021. Three of our boats in the top five and smiles all-round. Humbling to win this event for a fourth time in this great and historic class. Huge thanks to Morty for making it a reality for us and for driving the boat so accurately.

The Miami Etchells fleet keeps giving. I was invited to speak alongside the legendary Dirk Knuelman, promoting the Etchells class to the members of Biscayne Bay Yacht Club on the first night in. Lot of fun learning the origins of the class through the original builder’s eyes and seeing some great pics of Skip Etchells. Then it was into the training and racing with Pete and Mendels. We are enjoying a nice patch of form at present with good speed and collaborating well in the starts and around the race track. Wonderfully supported by Coach Larson.

Road trip to Porto Cervo, Sardinia for the 5.5 Metre World Championship. Takes me back to my youth and the days of driving to sailing events across Australia. We have a great squad in the convoy and lots of lies being told. In all, about 1,000 miles, two ferries, the Eurotunnel, the Alps and the Mont Blanc tunnel. Nice change of pace for a couple of days. After many days of watching sailboats race from a RIB, I am looking forward to sailing with Morty and Ruairidh on the iconic waters off Porto Cervo.

Wonderful to cap off a great summer at home in Cowes with coaching and supporting Jamie Hilton's wonderful team aboard Scoundrel at the 6 Metre Worlds. An impressive class of yacht and grouping of people. The Scoundrels took it out in very impressive fashion with a race in hand. Great poise and consistency from the guys, who were the one of the least experienced 6 Metre teams prior to the event. They were so engaged in the challenged and were committed to constant improvement every day of the lead up and the event. hats off Jamie, Big Al, Mike, Addo and Dave and ably supported by Tricia, Georgie, Rupert and of course, T-Root. Great job also to HM Juan Carlos for taking out the classic division in impressive style.

Reporting in from St Tropez, France after a very busy last few weeks.

The Etchells Worlds in Miami were a very challenging, but enjoyable event. I think it was my 10th Etchells Worlds and I am not sure I can remember so many teams preparing so diligently and the racing so intensely fought (or perhaps I am just getting old - speaking of which, we won the Grand Master Trophy!!). Peter, Mark and I placed 7th, which could have been a bit better, but could have been a lot worse. We were beaten by teams that ultimately did a better than us when it counted.

From there it was straight to wonderful Lake Garda for the 5.5 Metre Alpen Cup with Morty and Rory. Also in our British team were Louise Morton, Sam and Frida. We were defending a trophy we had won three times in a row, but alas, it was not to be.

Many great people in Cowes had worked hard over the winter to finish our new Hollom-designed boat - GBR 43 - in time for this event. We were fast. Won first race by a minute and were winning race two handily when rudder snapped clean off. An ambitious attempt to repair late into the night, saw us out the next day. We were a close 2nd in the first race of that day when rudder snapped on the first downwind. Anyways… a review into the rudder is underway and at least we know we are fast in the windier stuff we had…

And now I sit in St Tropez, where I am helping Team Interlodge as Coach. Nice team, great people and a fast boat.

I had the pleasure of chatting with the new intake of sailors at the Cowes Etchells Fleet Youth Academy on Saturday night at Royal London YC. The topic was rig set-up and I dusted off my infamous rig model (that I built back in 1995!). Always great to see such enthusiasm for our sport. The Etchells Youth Academy has now been going for over 10 years and is the brain-child of David Franks and David Bedford. I always find it such an inspirational environment and hats off to David Bedford, Duncan Truswell and the skilled group of instructors (some of which include former Youth Academy members). A busy couple of weeks working in Florida. First up was the Etchells Biscayne Bay series, sailing with Peter Duncan and Mark Mendelblatt. Great training beforehand and then some intense racing amongst great competitors. We placed 4th in an event where were over the start line prematurely in two of the five races. Bit to tidy up there, but overall we are getting better as a team with each outing. Then it was a lovely drive down the Overseas Highway to Key West with Kate for the Southernmost Regatta. I was there supporting Team Interlodge, who were racing both their 44 footer and the TP52. Busy week for a coach, but loved it. Great teams full of talented sailors and nice people.

Great training beforehand and then some intense racing amongst great competitors. We placed 4th in an event where were over the start line prematurely in two of the five races. Bit to tidy up there, but overall we are getting better as a team with each outing. Then it was a lovely drive down the Overseas Highway to Key West with Kate for the Southernmost Regatta. I was there supporting Team Interlodge, who were racing both their 44 footer and the TP52. Busy week for a coach, but loved it. Great teams full of talented sailors and nice people.

It has now been two and a half years since I designed the DogTracks for the Etchells jib lead. My goal in designing the system was to make it easier for trimmers to replicate settings and for the camber and twist of the jib to remain constant as the jib car was moved in and out on the track.

Ahhh, New Years Eve… always a time for reflection of the year past and what lies ahead. For me the last few weeks have been a lovely way to finish off what was a great year of sailing, work, helping people with their boats and sailing skills and friendships. Straight after the last 52 event in Barcelona, I travelled to my hometown of Melbourne and specifically St Kilda to hang out with our two oldest kids for five weeks. For Toby, it saw the hosting of the prestigious Australian Open Golf tournament at his workplace, the Victoria Golf Club. A wonderful time in a great place catching up with family and old friends with the odd bit of yacht racing thrown in. From there to Miami and the first event in the Etchells for what is going to be a busy winter and spring there, as we lead up to what will be a massive World Championship for this great class in April. Then home to a very cold, but welcoming Cowes to wind it down for the year and also to get more engaged in a very exciting 5.5 Metre boat-building project for Morty and I to sail at the 2023 Worlds in Porto Cervo. Looking ahead - well, the last couple of years taught us not to take anything for granted. I am very much looking forward to some great competition in the Etchells with Peter and Mark. I am excited about collaborating with the boatbuilding teams of Composite Craft and David Heritage Racing Yachts here in Cowes as we create, test and compete in the new Hollom 5.5 Metre. And last but not least, I am looking forward to the further collaboration with two great sailing teams - Interlodge in the 52’s and Team Aqua in the 44Cup.

Yesterday I was part of a winning team at the 5.5 Metre World Championship in Hank, Norway. This was the culmination of a vision by Peter Morton in early 2020 to embark on a British designed and built 5.5 Metre capable of winning the worlds.
Together with a very talented and experienced team of designers, builders, sailmakers and spar makers, I was in a privileged position to help Morty bring the vision to reality and in the meantime build two boats in Cowes - one of which was sailed by Louise Morton and her all female crew in Norway to a very credible 10th place in their first event.
Just before we left for Norway, Morty needed surgery and so was unable to compete. In an extremely generous decision, Morty sent us to fulfill the plan and compete at the Worlds. Our bow-man and tactician Elliot Hansen replaced Morty on the helm and our coach Sam Haines moved onto the bow.
A very testing week, as we had a bad first day accumulating 19 points in races 1 and 2. From there we made very few mistakes and the boat, rig and sails performed to their potential and we won 4 races and got a 2nd placing. Very satisfying to represent Morty and large group of supporters and contributors. Also, the environment we had onboard the boat was world class. No clear leader, but solid and consistent input from all. Great week!
