When the Boats Are Equal, It’s the Team That Makes the Difference
I have just read one of the best post-event reviews ever. Peter (Billy) Merrington put this piece together for the AUS Etchells Newsletter and I have decided to post it also. His points about the homogenous sail designs and convergence of rig set up by the top boats are very interesting. He notes the teamwork, communication and mental bandwidth required in getting the boats to perform to their potential are relevant to all racing sailboats. I love also that not once were boats or masts mentioned.
This mirrors my belief that any of hte boatbuilders can and do produce equalised hulls at the moment. Then it is over to the teams to unleash the potential on a consistent basis.
Well done Billy. Impressive prose for a Sydney Harbour tug-boat driver. Pittwater High School would be proud!
