GBR 41 - 2021 Quigley

5.5-class-association-logo-transparent.png

This lovely boat was designed for Peter Morton of Cowes, UK by Steve Quigley and One2Three Naval Architects in Sydney, Australia. The structural engineer was Suzy Russell of Orca Consulting in Cowes.

She was built in 2021 by David Heritage Racing Yachts (Cowes), using strip-planked cedar core and moulded over computer-cut frames. The composite skins are S-glass and epoxy resin.

The boat is best described as an all-rounder and middle of the rule range when it comes to weight, sail area and waterline length. She has a beautifully rounded chine and soft U-shaped sectional shape throughout her length.

The deck, appendages and spars were adapted for this boat. They were recycled from an existing 5.5Mtr - the former SUI 222 (built originally by Christof Wilke (SUI) for class legend Jurg Menzi (SUI).

The project was managed by Andrew Palfrey of Sailing.Dog on behalf of Morty.

GBR 41 was launched in Cowes in June of 2021. In initial trials on the Solent against GBR 40 (formerly NED 31 - a 2006 Wilke / Schmidt boat) it performed very well. We took here to the Alpen Cup in Torbole, Lake Garda (ITA) in October 2021 and she won the event on her first outing with a crew of Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey and Ben Cornish.
